Project Case| FILMBASE Media Glass Helps Upgrade the Monster Wall at Daejeon Hanwha Life Insurance Ball Park

In professional baseball, it’s often more than just the score that truly shapes a fan’s memories of the game. The split-second a batted ball is caught, an unpredictable bounce, or even a structure that “appears to be nothing more than a fence” can all become key factors that influence the flow of the game.
At Daejeon Hanwha Life Insurance Ball Park, South Korea, a structural innovation rooted in spatial zoning gave rise to the stadium’s most talked-about feature—the “Monster Wall.” The addition of FILMBASE Media Glass to this iconic structure has further amplified the wall’s ability to enhance the stadium atmosphere and evoke emotion.

First Level of Innovation: Zonal Reconstruction, Transforming the Logic of Outfield Space

The emergence of the “Monster Wall” was not a deliberately crafted visual symbol, but rather the natural result of a rational, functional design.
The project innovatively adopts a double-story bullpen structure in the right outfield area, a design unique to Asian baseball venues and rarely seen even in established professional stadiums across North America. Featuring a vertical upper-and-lower zoning layout to accommodate home and visiting team pitchers separately with independent movement routes, the structure streamlines pre-game scheduling efficiency and allows both sides to observe each other’s warm-up status, bringing greater strategic depth to on-field competition.
Excessively high walls naturally give rise to “monster walls”
Due to the stacked structure of the two-tiered warm-up area, the height of the right-field fence was raised to approximately 8 meters, which is significantly higher than the standard height for outfield fences at conventional baseball stadiums.
This ultra-high fence, “designed for structural integrity,” quickly demonstrated its unique impact on the field during actual games. Powerful hits that might otherwise have resulted in home runs were blocked by the high wall, and the ball took more unpredictable bounce paths due to the interaction between the wall and the protective barbed wire, directly affecting base-running outcomes and the pace of the game.
As the game progressed, fans began referring to this wall as the “Monster Wall.” It was no longer just the boundary of the outfield, but had become an “invisible variable” deeply involved in the course of the game—even earning the nickname “the team’s tenth outfielder.”
At this point, the first level of innovation is complete—a design choice at the zoning and structural levels that has created a highly recognizable symbol for the stadium.
The Second Layer of Innovation: Digital Upgrades to the “Monster Wall”
After its structural innovation was completed, the “Monster Wall” primarily served as a protective barrier and enclosure for a long time. Although it has received extensive media coverage and attracted significant attention from fans, it has yet to truly unlock the emotional value and content potential inherent in the space.
The second layer of innovation builds upon this foundation. Without altering the original structural characteristics of the “Monster Wall,” the project incorporates FILMBASE P20 Media Glass and integrates it into the core facade area of the “Monster Wall,” covering a total area of approximately 210 square meters. Rather than being mounted as external equipment, the display system blends seamlessly with the wall structure, becoming an integral part of the “Monster Wall’s” expressive power.

Enhanced by Transparent Displays: No Structural Changes, Yet an Enhanced Stadium Experience
Unlike traditional external LED screens, FILMBASE Media Glass uses glass as its native substrate and features high transparency. When the screen is off, the display system has minimal impact on the wall’s structure and the building’s architectural lines, fully preserving the “Monster Wall’s” original sense of power and overall texture; when illuminated, it can display visuals and atmospheric content in sync with the progress of the event, transforming this wall—which previously “only influenced the outcome of the match”—into an active participant in shaping the venue’s emotional atmosphere.

Looking back at the entire project, two progressive paths of innovation are clearly evident: First, through innovations in zoning and structure, the unique “Monster Wall” arena structure was naturally formed; second, building on the existing structure, the integration of transparent display technology amplified its comprehensive value in terms of atmosphere creation, content presentation, and communication.
FILMBASE Media Glass does not “create” the Monster Wall; rather, now that the Monster Wall has become a central symbol of the arena, it offers a more contemporary way to express it.
At Daejeon Hanwha Life Insurance Ball Park, the “Monster Wall” originated from a rational yet bold zoning design; the addition of FILMBASE Media Glass has transformed this wall from a factor influencing the game into a source of excitement for the audience, a medium for content, and a vehicle for creating value.

This project not only demonstrates the advantages of transparent display technology in complex architectural settings for professional sports venues, but also sets a new benchmark—one that harmonizes structure and technology while balancing aesthetics and functionality—for the digital transformation of distinctive walls and building facades at professional sports stadiums both domestically and internationally.
