As applications such as smart buildings and smart cockpits continue to evolve, the demand for glass is shifting from simply “adjustable transparency” to a range of multidimensional performance characteristics, including high-definition views, deep light blocking, thermal insulation and energy efficiency, and rapid response.

Traditional fogging-type pdlc films switch between transparent and fogged states through light scattering, offering proven advantages in basic privacy applications such as office partitions and hotel spaces. However, for high-end applications like curtain walls, panoramic skylights, and aircraft windows, simply making the view “unclear” is no longer sufficient—users want a clear view when the film is powered on, while also requiring stronger light-blocking and heat-insulating capabilities when the power is off. To address these more advanced light-control requirements, FILMBASE has officially launched its new, independently developed 25° Dye Liquid Crystal Film.

With nearly 50x optical contrast,it delivers both “high definition” and “deep shadowing”

25° DLC Film utilize the electro-optical properties of dye-based liquid crystal materials to dynamically adjust the light transmittance of glass. Laboratory test data show that the transmittance when powered on is 23.28%, and when powered off, it is 0.5%. This optical contrast of nearly 50 times enables the product to achieve a marked change in light transmittance between the powered-on and powered-off states, providing a new solution for projects requiring a wider range of lighting adjustments. When de-energized, the film appears deep dark, reducing light transmission; when energized, the film’s transmittance increases, providing better natural lighting and a more pleasant visual environment for the space.

0.24% ultra-low haze, maintaining a clear view even when powered on

In addition to the range of light transmittance adjustment, the visual performance of smart light-control materials when in a transparent state is equally critical. Through optimization of material formulation and optical structure, the 25° DLC Film

achieves a haze level of just 0.24%. When energized, this low haze effectively minimizes visual blurriness, delivering 98% visual clarity—fully meeting the requirements for unobstructed visibility in applications such as building curtain walls, smart partitions, and automotive glass. The product also features a wide 170° viewing angle, ensuring a consistent and uniform visual experience from various viewing perspectives.

45 ms ultra-fast startup instant response to lighting conditions

Smart light control requires not only “clear visibility” but also “rapid response.”25° DLC Films support millisecond-level state transitions: activation in as fast as 45 ms and deactivation in ≤200 ms. There’s no need to wait—the glass state can be quickly adjusted according to the space’s usage needs, enabling instant transitions between lighting conditions, privacy levels, and visual experiences.

From new construction to retrofitting existing buildings, these two approaches can be flexibly adapted to either scenario

Depending on the glass structure and construction conditions of different projects, Dye Liquid Crystal Films are available in two product formats: laminated and self-adhesive.

Laminated Type

Suitable for the laminated glass process at glass factories, this type encapsulates the film within the glass. Leveraging the laminated structure, it provides safety, explosion protection, and sound insulation while reducing the risk of scratches caused by direct exposure of the film. It is suitable for projects such as curtain walls in new buildings, factory-installed automotive applications, and customized smart partitions.

Self-Adhesive Type

Featuring a high-performance adhesive backing, this type can be directly applied to existing glass without replacing the original panes. With a shorter installation cycle, it lowers the barrier to retrofitting existing structures and is suitable for smart upgrades in existing buildings such as office buildings, hotels, and commercial spaces.

Designed for complex operating conditions while ensuring long-term, stable operation

Designed to meet the specific application requirements of the construction and transportation sectors, 25° DLC Films have been engineered for optimal performance in terms of power consumption, operating temperature, and service life. With a power consumption of less than 5 W/m² when energized, they support continuous operation; their wide operating temperature range of –30°C to 95°C adapts to various complex environments; and they have a service life of over 100,000 hours when powered. Additionally, they utilize a flexible PET substrate, enabling fabrication for curved and irregularly shaped glass surfaces. We offer roll materials in multiple specifications and provide project-specific customization services to accommodate a wide variety of glass configurations.

FILMBASE has simultaneously developed two product lines—conventional fogged PDLC films and 25° DLC Films—not as simple substitutes for one another, but to provide differentiated solutions tailored to different application needs.

Conventional fogged PDLC films are suitable for basic applications such as offices, hotels, and conference rooms, where privacy and visual obstruction are the primary requirements; 25° DLC Films are better suited for advanced applications with higher demands for deep light blocking when powered off, high-definition viewing when powered on, rapid response, and heat insulation and light control—such as high-end curtain walls, automotive sunroofs, and aircraft windows. Different spaces, different types of glass, and different requirements call for different technical approaches.
